A Review on the movie Beastly.

Titans, monsters and dragons were the first thing that enter my head when I saw the title, that is why it really shocked me when I saw Alex Pettyfer doing the push-ups showcasing his hot body. So I find it hard to uncover the connection.

The origin of the movie is a novel also titled Beastly written by Alex Flinn, that’s why, I think the director/writer Daniel Barnz have no choice but to use it as their title.

It should be a modern Beauty and the Beast story but it turned out as “Kyle and the Dwarf.” If Barnz really want Vanessa Anne Hudgens as a lead actress, they should have hired a shorter lead actor, or if they want Alex Pettyfer so much, they should have hired taller lead actress; The height difference was very obvious since they are always together plus the two don’t have chemistry so I didn’t really feel ‘kilig’ and all.

So much for the actors and the title, let’s talk about the story. The beginning of the story is so out of placed, what was that “look at me” thingee, I find it a very desperate move.

Green Committee. Of all the possible school organization why that? , Kyle, (the lead actor, had established a rich, good looking and popular personality), why not student body president?, was it because of his out of the world lame speeches, is that it? But his audience seem to like it why Green Committee? One more thing about this issue, who would vote for someone after saying it’s just for his transcript and he doesn’t care at all. Everything is meaningless.

Cliched. The main theme of the story is looking beyond the surface and finding inner beauty. That quotation is so overrated and over used, so I watched the movie till the end hoping that something new will pop-out but sad to say, none, making the story as beastly as the title.

Links. It wasn’t shown on the movie how Lindy(Hudgens) seemed to have an interest to Kyle (Pettyfer) before he turned into a Halloween guy but it wasn’t explained or shown. And about Lindy’s father, who appeared to be forced in the story just to bring Lindy in Kyle’s house. The fact that Kyle blackmailed Lindy’s father to have Lindy is a potential twist but it wasn’t used. Bottom line is the story is very predictable, if you know beauty and the beast you know how the story flow.

The story is very common and nothing is odd about it, in fact the beauty and the beast played in cartoon is way more interesting than this.

Based off the previews I thought I would like this movie. Yes, it seemed like it’d be predictable but also a love story. I am a hopeless romantic and my co-worker at DISH was telling me she really liked it. I read some mixed reviews and I plan on watching it. I already ordered it on Blockbuster @Home so I should be getting it in the mail soon. I am hoping it doesn’t disappoint.
